The InterviewPart 1

The Interview…Part 1 Please note that, as of August 2018, our process for assigning interviews has changed (though Kims observations on the interview and our interviewers). A description of the current interview process is posted here.   For me, Educational Counselors or ECs are a special group of people. They are my colleagues, classmates, college roommates and lab partners, and many are good friends. They are engineers, scientists, musicians and everything in between. Some are teachers, teaching in schools not far from yours while others are in school as students themselves. They are also teachers of a type when they talk to each of you during your interview. I say that NOT because I have provided them with a test that I want each of them to give when they do an interview. I just dont do that! The interview isnt anything like a test. But each EC can be something like a teacher when you talk to them. And this is how I know each of you is looking to find colleges where you feel you can spend the next four years. Your EC will be able to help you with lots of the questions you have about why MIT could be a good choice for you. They are experts in what being a student at MIT is really like because theyve already done it and they love to talk about what made their MIT experience memorable and why it was ultimately their choice. They experienced it all: the problem sets, living in the dorms, fraternities and sororities, discovered Boston and walked the infinite corridor and the steam tunnels. Theyve been athletes, run organizations, performed in musical groups and some have taken part in a hack (or two or three). Ask about their experiences and I know youll learn something about this place that you dont already know. But, they are students too as they are at the interview to learn from you and not information they could learn in any classroom. They will ask you lots of questions about what you like and what you dislike, what you do in your free time or if you have any free time at all. They will ask about projects youve done or groups youve belonged to and what that group did and, most importantly, how you helped. They want to learn about you and you get to teach them about what makes you different and special. Meeting with an EC can be a lot of fun. Ive heard great stories from students who said that talking with their EC was when they realized that MIT was a place theyd like to be. Some students keep in touch with their ECs while they are at MIT and continue in the role of teacher when they tell their ECs about the experiences they are having on campus. The ECs appreciate it because while they like being the teacher they still enjoy the experience of being the student as well. I know that all the various deadlines seem to be coming up way to fast. Sadly, thats just part of the process. For those of you who are applying Early Action, this is really good time to get in touch with your EC to set up an interview. The deadline to set up the interview is October 20 but its really best to have completed the interview by then. When the interview is over, your EC will send us a report and that report is due November 1just like your application. Soconsider this my gentle nudge to get in touch with your EC and set up your interview sooner rather than later. Id love to hear what kind of questions you all have about the interview. Let me know and Ill do my best to address them all. There are no stupid questionsif just one person asks a question, there are lots of others out there afraid to ask the very same one.

The Belgian Congo, as Zaire and now the Democratic...

The Belgian Congo, as Zaire and now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, were formerly called was the creation of King Leopold of Belgium who desperately wanted a colony. By the late 19th century there was little land left for the taking except in Africa and it had become obvious that taking over independent lands was neither wise nor practical. King Leopold II, King of the Belgians, was a man of enormous appetites both for land and food—he once ate two whole pheasants at a restaurant in Paris, and it was not unusual for him to order several entrees. His colony was 75 times larger than Belgium. Stanley’s explorations in Africa were becoming well known and sensational, and Leopold carefully wooed him into striking a bargain--Stanley†¦show more content†¦Any resistance to the country’s plunder was met with strong measures. Failing to meet quotas was a capital offense. Hands of dead Congolese were cut off and kept in storage to account for expended ammunition, although often the natives were killed just for sport. It has been estimated that 50% of the population died between the 1870’s and 1919, approximately 10 million people were killed most often from sickness and starvation. Leopold was a genius at public relations and he knew how to accumulate supporters in other countries through flattery and marketing. Civilization and suppression of the slave trade were words often used to describe his motives He insisted he wanted to create a free state similar to Liberia, an idea that appealed to American white racists who were still looking for places to export America’s blacks. John Tyler Morgan, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Henry Shelton Sanford, wealthy Florida orange planter and strong supporter of President Chester A. Arthur, were easily Manipulated by the King into gaining American support for his efforts. Reading this book reinforced my view that, as a society, our values and standards are far superior to those of the nineteenth century. The discovery of rubber and its immense number of uses for an increasingly industrial society made it a valuable commodity that would make Leopold immensely rich. Although Charles Moore was successful in leading teams he seemed to have major issues with this team of vice presidents. According to the Harvard Business Review Chattanooga Ice Cream Case the team was very dysfunctional; they exhibited a lack of trust, high in conflict, disrespectful of each ther and exhibited avoidance issues with accountability. Team members seemed to always lay blame to other member. Moore needs to be more assertive in dismissing the ways of the past and the loss of Stay Shop business needs to be put aside. Moore needs to give clear direction and assign responsibilities to each team member. Moore needs to convey that team cohesiveness is a must and this will go a long way to help ensure no further loss of business. This paper will examine how Moore’s leadership approach contributed to the teams’ dysfunction, discuss what the roup of employees themselves could do to better understand the perspectives of each other and their boss as well as make recommendations about Moore should do now to help his team work together and manage conflicts more effectively. Charlie’s Leadership Style In assessing where Charlie Moore goes wrong, it’s important to look at his leadership style. According to the DISC style, Charlie is a â€Å"Steady (S) Leader. Specifically, this means Charlie operates at a methodical pace and likes leading in an orderly environment. He may readily view leading in a â€Å"fast-paced† environment as intimidating or stressful. His leadership style is collaborative in nature and he values group efforts. Charlie is a cautious leader that seldom leads by authority as he is comfortable working behind the consensus of the group as he doesn’t like mak ing decisions alone. He is demotivated by competitive environments and changing direction abruptly. He enjoys leading in a harmonic environment with little or no confrontations or conflict. Leaders prepare the organizations for change; Charlie does not build trust nor align his people. Lack of Leadership As a leader Charlie needs to â€Å"prepare organizations for change and help them ope as they struggle through it† (Week 2, Lecture 2). The first evidence of Charlie’s failure as a leader is when he calls the group together to communicate the news about losing their major customer. The mood is somber as Charlie calls the group together to â€Å"mourn† (Sloane, The Chattanooga Ice Cream Division, HBR, p. l) and to fgure out what needs to be done about it. As a leader he must exude a sense of â€Å"positive energy’ Cack Welch, Winning, p. 84) to prepare his people to act and energize their best thinking to deal with this challenge. His style of (S) may not like change, but e needs to set a tone of optimism and decisiveness that says that they will come through this challenge successfully. First of all, Moore should master self-leadership for himself. Then encourage and model it for others on the team. Manz indicates that â€Å"Leaders facilitate employee self-set goals and reward effective self-leadership when it does occur. Overall, they create and nurture systems that allow teamwork and a holistic self-leadership culture to flourish† (Charles Manz, 2001 , Leading Others to Lead Themselves, p. 221). I believe that Charlie and Charlie’s team would benefit from earning about their own leadership style by taking the Disc and TKI assessments and possibly creating smaller strategically paired teams within the group to come up with a foundation and vision for the direction in which the company should go as a whole. Lack of Candor Another example of where Charlie goes wrong is that he doesn’t develop an environment of trust where his people don’t hold back – even though he may not like conflict. As an example of this, Charlie has several meetings to ask his team what their thoughts are about how to compete. â€Å"When you are an individual contributor, ou try to have all the answers. That’s your Job-to be an expert, the best at what you do, maybe even the smartest person in the room. When you are a leader, your Job is to have all the questions†¦ Questioning, however, is never enough, following Rule 6: Leaders probe with curiosity that borders on skepticism, making sure your questions unleash debate and raise issues that get action† (Welch, 2005, p. 74). Moore should first create an intentional communication strategy. His management team must understand and support a common vision with a common purpose. This requires clarity. Clarity begins with effective communication. He should make sure communication from his management team reaches all employees. The article by Ferrazzi (Harvard Business Review) indicates three specific techniques, developed from the author’s research, which can help coworkers collaborate and interact more effectively. The techniques, which are based on creating trust that allows team members to speak candidly, are â€Å"dividing meetings into smaller groups, naming a candor advocate, and teaching how to give and receive feedback with a positive attitude† (Ferrazzi, 2012, Candor, Criticism, and Teamwork, p. 0). Team Dysfunctions The Chattanooga Ice Cream team is dysfunctional for several reasons. Some of those reasons include an absence of trust, avoidance, and not being accountable. Also, there is a lack of commitment amongst some managers. Moore is also looking for buy-in from all members for group decisions. There was no clear cut rule as to how decisions were going to be made. Simply put, Charles Moore failed to incorporate clear operating rules. Week Four 4 Lecture – Building High Performance Teams suggests that â€Å"when managers agree on ground rules in advance, the team is uch more likely to run efficiently,† this is especially true with the Chattanooga Ice Cream team. According to Rick Johnson, Charlie could â€Å"Challenge is management team; ask for solutions, assigning both responsibility and empowerment accordingly to utilize individual skills. Ownership of ideas and initiatives builds commitment. Involving the team in creating direction and solutions through empowerment generates commitment to the tasks necessary to meet objectives. A way to get over the major loss of a client and overshadow the â€Å"mourning† effect would be to hallenge the management team to collectively bring in a new client or a few clients that could equal the departure of the one loss, in terms of volume. Also, Moore should create offsite team-building activities on a quarterly basis. The gatherings/ outings should be used to build unification and trust in each other. New Direction for Charles seems to want to be Just another member of the team, an individual contributor, wanting to give his part instead of asking the explicit result-driven questions required of him in his leadership role. Welch, goes on to say, â€Å"But that’s he Job. You want bigger solutions ask questions; healthy debate, decisions, and actions will get everyone there† (p. 76). There is nowhere to go, if there is no one to lead. The dysfunctions of the team lie with the dysfunctions of the leader and no directions. Regardless of making the wrong or right decision, in regards to the CICC case, if no action is taken, then the company will fail for sure. As a Business Development Executive, I would tend to push the team to research and target other clients to fill the void left by the client lost, eliminating the somberness, creating otivation to accomplish a new goal, and strengthen the team by focusing efforts into one vision. He should run his team through assessments that could help him strategically pair individual weaknesses and strengths together, not only to complement each other going forward but to build credibility as a leader and start to build a foundation for candor, voice, and dignity going forward. Gaining new clients would most likely cost additional funds in the research and marketing and may cause little investment growth up front; however stabilizing the vision with a decision is aking the correct effort to save this company under the current circumstances. Manufacturing The Products In House Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Manufacturing The Products In House. Answer: The decision regarding whether a business needs to manufacture or purchase a product depends on both tangible and intangible factors, which might change with the passage of time. Manufacturing the products in-house might help in saving money and time. However, it is convenient as well to purchase from a vendor specialising in the particular item. Moreover, making a product from the initial stage could be a method of providing additional work for the valued staffs during the slowdown of the business. A make or buy decision is the act of selecting between making a product or purchasing the same from an external supplier. In make or buy decision, the most significant factors to be taken into account include portion of quantitative evaluation like the related production cost and whether the organisation has the capacity to manufacture at the needed levels. It is referred as the decision of outsourcing, as it contrasts the benefits and costs related to production of a particular product or service internally to the benefits and costs associated with hiring an external supplier for the questionable resources. In order to contrast the costs rightfully, each aspect about the acquisition and item storage needs to be taken into consideration. The primary factors to be considered in deciding whether to manufacture the canisters or buy the same from the outside supplier include the following: Quality: If Playdough Company could develop a product, which is better in contrast to purchasing from a vendor, it is necessary to make the canisters in-house. It is assumed that the organisation could charge a greater price in justifying labour and materials. However, if the organisation fails to specialise in canisters, a specialist vendor would be highly effective. Since Playdough Company is involved in making value-added canisters, it could provide greater quality by making raw materials from the beginning, as they would be fresh optimally. Quantity: The product volume that the organisation requires would affect the decision of whether to manufacture or purchase the same. For instance, if Playdough Company needs a box of canisters, it is impractical to fashion the same from the initial stage. However, sometimes a huge demand in the market could be a cause of not to make an in-house product. In case, the organisation uses 10,000 boxes for packaging products, it could be considered as cost-effective to contract to a third party firm foe making them to a custom size (Fullerton, Kennedy and Widener 2013). Convenience: When Playdough Company has been operating in high gear to meet the current demand, it would be highly feasible to make the products, instead of purchasing the same. However, if the vendor of the organisation that manufactures the product belongs to a cross-border nation and it could not dispatch the needed items on short notice, it is feasible to manufacture the product in-house. The convenience of purchasing or making products might change in relation to the overall sales volume that the organisation is presently transacting along with the amount of additional space and labour of the same. Marketing: In the words of Otley and Emmanuel (2013), making in-house products is a significant strategy of marketing. For instance, in case of clothing store making and selling its own dress line provides the customers with an added value and a strong brand. Similar is in the case of a restaurant making its own sauces and dressings, which provide unique flavours. In case of Playdough Company, making canisters could add additional features to the product. However, the discriminating and savvy customers often concentrate on whether the organisation has made or purchase the products it sells. Hence, Playdough Company could develop its own inventory for building an educated and loyal client base. Thus, based on the above discussion, it could be stated that the factors affecting the decision of Playdough Company to purchase canisters instead of producing them in-house comprise of lack of internal expertise, small requirements of volume, desire for varied sourcing and the fact that the item might be crucial to the strategy to the organisation. Excessive consideration might be provided, if the organisation obtains the opportunity to work with a firm providing outsourcing services successfully in the market to develop a long-term association. In a similar fashion, the influential dynamics towards manufacturing an item include the current capacity of production, effective quality control and proprietary technology needing protection. Finally, it is necessary for the firm to consider whether the supplier could seek for long-term arrangement, if necessary during high demand situations.
